Female Deputy Accused of Having Sex with Male Inmate at West Valley Lockup

Katina M. Carter, 38, was arrested Oct. 4 on suspicion of engaging in sexual activity with a consenting 19-year-old male inmate at West Valley Detention Center.

A woman deputy was arrested Thursday on suspicion of having sex with a male inmate at West Valley Detention Center, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

Deputy Katina Marie Carter, 38, is accused of engaging in sexual activity with a consenting 19-year-old male inmate at the county-operated lockup in Rancho Cucamonga.

The inmate was identified by the Sheriff's Department as a victim and his name was not released.

Specialized Investigators with the Sheriff's Department were assigned Tuesday Oct. 2 to conduct an investigation at West Valley, according to the sheriff's Public Affairs Division.

"Recently, jail staff became concerned about frequent interaction between a female deputy and a male inmate," sheriff's officials said.

"Investigators received information that solidified the concern and served a search warrant at Katina Carter's residence," sheriff's officials said.

"At the conclusion of the search warrant, Carter was taken into custody and booked for PC289.6(a)(2) - An employee or officer of a public entity detention facility, or an employee…who engages in sexual activity with a consenting adult who is confined in a detention facility."

Carter was arrested Thursday and released on a bail bond Friday Oct. 5, according to inmate records. She is currently on paid administrative leave, sheriff's officials said.

West Valley Detention Center is about 20 miles west of Redlands and Loma Linda.
