Gifts for Guns: County, Redlands PD Hosting Firearm Buy-Back Event
The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department is hosting its first "gun buy back program" this summer, officials announced.
Redlands police, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department and several other law enforcement agencies will host a gun buy-back event this summer, sheriff's officials recently announced.
The first countywide Gun Buy Back Program will be held at a total of six locations throughout San Bernardino County– Redlands included– on June 1, according to a press announcement from the sheriff's department.
"The countywide Gun Buyback Program will reward voluntary surrender of firearms, while engaging our communities towards a common goal of reducing gun violence," an announcement from the organization states. "It is an anonymous process in which individuals can surrender their weapons, no questions asked."

In return for turning in the weapons, individuals will be rewarded with money to be used at Stater Bros. Markets as follows:
- $50 gift card for inoperable weapons
- Up to $100 in gift cards for hand guns, shot guns and rifles
- Up to $200 in gift cards for assault weapons (as classified in California)
You're asked to transport the unloaded weapons in the trunk or rear area of the vehicle you bring to the event. There is no limit on the amount you can turn in, according to the sheriff's department.

Funding for the program is made possible through Proposition 30, which approved a temporary tax in 2012 on those making $250,000 or more for seven years, and raised the sales tax by ¼ cent for four years.
In Redlands, people can turn in their weapons at the Stater Bros. Market parking lot at 11 E. Colton Avenue.
