Mother, Children Remain Hospitalized in Loma Linda

Investigators' report details a night of horror for the family of Ian Roderiquez who detectives say killed his 16-year-old son and tortured the rest of the family.

A woman and two of her children remain at Loma Linda University Medical Center after enduring what investigators described as a night of brutal beatings and torture at the hands of the woman’s husband.

Ian Anthony Roderiquez, fatally stabbed his 16-year-old son, beat his wife and four youngest children with a monkey wrench and a metal pipe and forced his children to walk on broken glass, detectives said. When his 10-year-old daughter refused to lie down on the glass, authorities said Roderiquez poured bleach on the child and threatened to set her on fire.

And he reportedly did it because he believed the family has stolen his drugs, investigators said

Ian Roderiquez was arrested on March 24 by deputies who were checking into a report of screams for help in the area. They found a grisly scene at the home in the 6600 block of Merito Avenue in unincorporated San Bernardino.

Deputies were called to the home at 9:18 a.m. and found Ian Roderiquez. They were speaking to him through a front window when sheriff’s officials said he smashed the window with a pair of hedge clippers.

After some negotiations, deputies convinced Roderiquez to step outside. Officials say he climbed out through the window. A sofa, according to the report, was propped against the front door.

Inside the home, deputies found the man's wife, 35-year-old Sujal Roderiquez, and their children: 13-year-old Jacob Roderiquez, 12-year-old Gabriel Roderiquez, 10-year-old Daniella Roderiquez, 8-year-old Yasmine Roderiquez in the home’s attached garage. They were beaten and bloodied.

Sujal Roderiquez lay on a twin bed box spring. She had been beaten and stabbed multiple times, officials said. The children were found with serious injuries. The youngsters asked deputies to check on their brother 16-year-old Richard, according to the report.

“The children said Richard was in the garage under a car seat,” the report states. The teen was found exactly where the children said. He was dead. Coroner’s investigators say the boy had been deceased for about 10 to 18 hours.

Sujal Roderiquez was so critically injured she could only give detectives a brief statement. But the children described several hours of terror at the hands of their father. Gabriel told authorities that about 10 p.m. on March 22, their father began beating them with the wrench.

Ian Roderiquez was swearing at them, accusing them of stealing his drugs, the boy told authorities. His father used a pair of shears to stab his mother and hit her with a monkey wrench.

He then began to beat Richard with the wrench. The coroner’s office reported the teen appeared to have a broken leg, several defensive wounds, cuts, bruises and several skull fractures.

The family was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center. The family has asked that no information be released on their condition, said Briana Pastorino, a spokeswoman with the hospital.

Two of the children have been released Child Protective Services.

Ian Roderiquez was wearing only a pair of bloody socks when deputies took him into custody, investigators said. His hands were swollen and his fingers were covered in blood, officials said.

During an interview he called his family thieves and liars, according to the report.

“Ian suggested his wife was responsible for any injuries family members may have received,” the report said. “Ian said when he left his resident to speak with deputies his family members were okay. Ian said his wife was trying to frame him and injured herself by striking a bedpost and bed frame continuously with her body.”

Roderiquez has been charged with one count of attempted murder, four counts of torture and four counts of child abuse. On March 25, pleaded not guilty to all charges, San Bernardino County District Attorney officials said.

He is scheduled to appear in court for a procedural hearing at 8:30 this morning.
