UPDATE: Redlands Resident Who Died in Mentone Mustang Crash Identified as Brandon Azael Vargas Tapia

Update 8:49 p.m. A Redlands resident who died Friday night when a Mustang struck a tree on Citrus Avenue in Mentone was identified by the coroner Monday evening as Brandon Azael Vargas Tapia, 19.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 9:05 p.m. July 12, when Vargas Tapia was driving a Ford Mustang west on Citrus approaching Opal at an unknown speed.

"For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle veered off the roadway and struck a tree," CHP officials said in a statement. "As a result of the collision, the driver was partially ejected and sustained fatal injuries."

Hand-made signs and candles were placed over the weekend at the tree in memory of Vargas Tapia.

Posted 1:14 p.m. The California Highway Patrol was seeking more info Monday about the Friday night crash of a Mustang in Mentone that resulted in the death of a Redlands resident.

A coroner's investigator Monday morning told Redlands-Loma Linda Patch the young man's name could not be released. Investigators were still trying to confirm his identification and notify his family.

Hand-made signs and candles were set up over the weekend at the tree where the fatal crash occurred on Citrus Avenue near Opal.

According to the CHP, the crash occurred around 9:05 p.m. July 12, when a 19-year-old man, a resident of Redlands, was driving a Ford Mustang west on Citrus approaching Opal at an unknown speed.

"For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle veered off the roadway and struck a tree," CHP officials said in a statement. "As a result of the collision, the driver was partially ejected and sustained fatal injuries. Preliminary evidence indicates he was not wearing his seatbelt."
