Loma Linda Residents Asked to Turn in Expired Prescription Drugs

Second annual Drug Take Back day encourages people to safely dispose of drugs that may be used by those battling addiction.

San Bernardino County Sheriff's and Redlands Police are among several agencies to participate in Drug Take-Back Day, an event that encourages residents to turn in their expired and unused prescription drugs at various stations across the county.

The collection is part of a national effort to prevent pill abuse and theft. Local officials are working in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and other U.S. police agencies.

Collections will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday morning at the following locations:

“Americans turned in over 242,000 pounds – 121 tons – of prescription drugs at nearly 4,100 sites operated by more than 3,000 of the DEA’s state and local law enforcement partners,” said Sheriff Rod Hoops in a news release. “The success of the First Nationwide Prescription Drug Take Back Day offered in September of last year is clearly an indication of how important this program is to the safety of the citizens of San Bernardino County”

In September, a national collection effort by law enforcement agencies collected 242,000 pounds of prescription drugs.

Sheriff's officials said that unused medicines become susceptible to misuse and abuse in greater numbers than those who abuse cociane, hallucinogens and heroin combined.
