Posted 12:22 p.m. A man was fatally injured in a wrong way head-on crash early Thursday on Interstate 215 in the Riverside-Moreno Valley area just west of the 60 Freeway, a Highway Patrol spokesman said.

The crash occurred around 3:20 a.m. Dec. 26, Officer Travis Monks of the Riverside CHP said in a statement.

Patricia Starr, 24, of Moreno Valley was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Impala, traveling north, the wrong way, in the southbound lanes of the 215 north of Box Springs Road at a speed greater than 65 miles per hour, Monks said.

A Fontana man, 55, was driving a Toyota Corolla sedan south in the southbound lanes approaching Box Springs Road when Starr's Impala struck the Toyota "causing catastrophic damage to both vehicles," Monks said.

Starr and her passenger were trapped in their vehicle and they were extricated by Cal Fire personnel. The Fontana man, whose name was not released, was also trapped and he died at the crash scene, Monks said.

Starr and her passenger were taken to Riverside Community Hospital for treatment of their injuries.

"Starr was determined to be operating her vehicle under the influence of an alcoholic beverage at the time of the collision," Monks said. Due to her injuries she remained under care at the hospital.

Monks said the crash investigation was continuing and charges against Starr were pending.
