Update 1:39 p.m. A man who was allegedly found hiding in bushes on Hilltop Drive was arrested early Tuesday on suspicion of burglary and identified by police as a resident of Yucaipa.
There was a burglary-in-progress call just before midnight Monday in the 12000 block of Hilltop Drive, Redlands police spokesman Carl Baker said.
A sheriff's helicopter crew helped locate the suspect and direct police to his hiding place, Baker said.
Robert Wayne Harris, 22, of Yucaipa, was arrested at 1:26 a.m. in the 12700 block of Hilltop, according to Redlands police and inmate records.
Harris was held Tuesday afternoon on $75,000 bail at West Valley Detention Center, Baker said.
Police investigators remained on Hilltop Tuesday afternoon, residents said.
Posted 1:19 p.m. Neighbors in the hills of east Redlands were talking Tuesday about a reported night burglary, a helicopter and police search, and an apparent suspect who was caught under a neighbor's pomegranate tree.
Redlands police had not confirmed details of what occurred as of 1 p.m. Tuesday.
A resident of Hilltop Drive near Alta Vista, who did not want her name published, gave the following account:
"I was watching tv, around 11ish, and I noticed a helicopter was hovering in our neighborhood and shining a light down in the yards," the resident said. "I could see people outside too and at least one police car down the street.
"There were several figures, now I realize they were police officers.
"About an hour later a helicopter came back and continued the search from the air," the resident said. "This was probably close to 1 o'clock in the morning.
"I saw one officer go into a neighbor's yard with a flashlight. After that I went to bed.
"This morning my neighbor told me someone had tried to to break into another neighbor's guest house and it looked like they had captured one person," the resident said.
"I really appreciate the patrol being up here and their quick response and everything."
About 1 p.m. Tuesday, a police officer was in the neighborhood photographing a vehicle on Hilltop Drive that may be connected to the burglary investigation, residents said. The officer told a resident the vehicle was reported stolen.
In August, volunteers went door-to-door with fliers in the Hilltop-Alta Vista neighborhood, advising residents of another burglary in the area.
