Patton State Hospital Inmate Severely Beaten, Dies at Loma Linda Hospital

Reports indicate another patient at the mental health facility beat the man to death.

An inmate at Patton State Hospital found with "severe upper body trauma" was beaten so badly that he died from his injuries at Loma Linda University Medical Center, coroner's officials and news reports indicated Tuesday.

The unidentified 65-year-old man was found around 11:40 a.m. Saturday at the mental health facility located just north of Highland, according to the San Bernardino County coroner's office.  He was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where he died about six hours later.

San Bernardino Police told the Los Angeles Times that the patient was beaten up by another hospital resident "because he didn't like the guy."

A 40-year-old was arrested after the attack on suspicion of murder, according to the news agency, who added that the two men had been alone in a room that normally sleeps four people when the attack happened.

The man's yells for help sent staff running to his aid, a police sergeant told The Times.
