PHOTOS: Fire Rips Through Home in Redlands, One Escapes

Fire ripped through a home Thursday in the hills of southwest Redlands, sending up a dark column smoke visible for miles in all directions, and one person escaped.

The fire was reported shortly before 12:30 p.m. Aug. 8 in the 1500 block of Smiley Heights Drive, Redlands spokesman Carl Baker tells Redlands-Loma Linda Patch.

Redlands and Loma Linda firefighters responded, Baker said.

"One person was home at the time and escaped the home prior to arrival of the first emergency responder, which was a Police Department Community Service Officer," Baker said in an email. "No one was injured. There were no pets in the home."

The fire caused "significant damage" to the home, Baker said.

Firefighters pulled a car out of the garage and covered it to protect it from damage, Baker said. Firefighters remained at the scene as of 3:45 p.m. There was no preliminary info on the cause of the blaze.
