Police: Child Mistakes Meth for Candy, Hospitalized in Loma Linda

A 7-year-old girl has been hospitalized at LLUMC after eating methamphetamine she found at home, police said.

A young girl was recovering Tuesday at Loma Linda Children's Hospital after police say she ate meth, thinking it was candy, according to sheriff's reports.

The incident happened around midnight Friday, at a home in the town of Joshua Tree.  Authorities found out about the girl's condition after she was taken by ambulance to the High Desert Medical Center, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff's Sergeant J. Radeleff.

"The victim was having seizures, had a severe fever, an elevated heart rate and other symptoms," Radeleff said, adding that a urine test came back positive for methamphetamine/ amphetamine.

The girl was then air-lifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center Children's Hospital "for further emergency medical treatment" in critical condition, according to the sergeant.

Through their investigation, police found out that she had "mistakenly ingested the methamphetamine thinking it was candy," Radeleff said.

Once that was determined, social services placed the parents' other three children in "a safe environment," he added.

Michelle Beamer, 30, and Johnnie Koranda, 32, were arrested on felony child endangerment charges and booked into the San Bernardino County Jail, where they remained as of Tuesday night, according to jail records.

Parents aught to be getting help with drug issues with limited incarceration... jail time for drug offenders really doesn't help much... short term solution only.
Deedee January 16, 2013 at 04:07 AM
Parents need to be put in jail and have the children taken away from them. NO parent should have children around drugs.

God Bless the child...

What a shame how this drug just keeps destroying lives.

Sadly deedee, this child will just end up back in thier care. Unless she dies nothing more then drug charges will be charged. Calif. has pathetic child endangerment rules. The DA office will be more concerned to get a drug charge then endangerment.

Even more reason to get the parents help to clean up... the children often end up back with the parents after going in and out of foster care and since the parents now have a record, the downward spiral will continue. Yes, they have been horribly irresponsible parents - so help them be better...not worse. Jail time does not help drug users be better people. Of course, protecting the child is most important.

With a case like this the parents should (will?) be on a strict timeline to do different drug/parenting classes and if they don't comply they will have their rights terminated. Sadly the stuff they are required to do are just about money making, so as long as they show up they will be counted as perfect studies. IOW they can go to all the classes and get their kids back without changing a thing. The good thing about a meth head (if there is a good thing) is they won't show up to the classes. I believe Riv county has a 1yr limit for the parents to act or lose parental rights

Glenda you are very wrong. DA will likely go after Child Endangerment (if we were in FL it would hold a life sentence, why does Riv county only hold three year man/min)

True jail won't help with the addiction unless the parent wants it...freedom won't help with addiction unless the person wants it. Here is the deal Nadine THEY COMMITTED a crime jail time is needed for the crime not the addiction. Remember they wre not arrested for possession or under the influence they almost killed their child! (should be an attempt murder charge)

Think about all you who think the parents just need "rehab" They were not even honest enough to say OUR KID ATE OUR DRUGS so the child could be treated properly immediately.....they let them run drug tests to find out what was going on.

point well made Washy!

I'm certainly not advocating for these parents but... we all know that addiction is a terrible depravity within an individual and they aren't going to do what's best for anyone but themselves... that's part of the "disease" especially when it includes big trouble with the law. I'm just suggesting that the current way of doing things doesn't appear to be very effective.

I want to know why the little girl was up at midnight and eating what she thought was candy....doesnt she have school? The parents need rehab and their butts kicked...how irresponsible....

LEESA/leesa, Why on earth would you defend drug-addicted parents who left their "stash" where a 7 year old could get into it, unless you yourself are also a druggie? And BTW, you do realize that this story is from 4 months ago, right? Ah, I see...you just got sober enought to read it, right?
Sarah B May 10, 2013 at 08:24 PM
@LEESA we aren't at all perfect and the reason we as concerned citizens judge, is cause we are taxpayers, and we are left with the mess to pay for these people to get cleaned up, left with the mess to pay for these people's kids to go to school, pay for their food , etc, etc. (cause they end up in the system, getting financial assistance, food stamps, etc)! that would definitely be a good reason to sit back BLOG AND JUDGE!!
beaumontdave May 10, 2013 at 09:06 PM
People judge all the time, by all kinds of measures, even you Leesa, you just don't acknowledge doing it. Body language, dress, attitude, we judge all sorts of things, and when people make horrible choices that hurt others, we remember, we distance ourselves from those who put us all at risk with their behavior. Do you really want to wait for what ever Supreme Being you believe in, to pass judgment and punish bad people. Charlie Manson and Ted Bundy did a lot of damage before men judged them and put them in prison. Judgment is how humans decide what is good and bad in this life, and being flawed, which we all are, doesn't preclude the right to make decisions about the behavior of others.
