Police: Mom Tries to Kill Infant Son at Loma Linda University Children's Hospital

A San Bernardino mother was jailed Friday on $1 million bail after police say she beat her 17-week-old baby when he was in the hospital.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, 28-year-old Shira Hart's infant boy had been admitted to Loma Linda University Children's Hospital on Sept. 11 for apneic episodes, or trouble breathing.

Once there, more problems allegedly repeatedly arose when the mother would visit.

"On several occasions while the mother was visiting, the baby stopped breathing and required resuscitation," the sheriff's statement says.  "The baby was resuscitated and remains admitted at the LLUCH."

On Monday, Sept. 23, hospital staff contacted the sheriff's "crimes against children" unit to report suspected abuse.

"Detectives from the Crimes Against Children Detail conducted an investigation and learned that Shira Hart had assaulted the baby," the sheriff's department said.

Jail records indicate that Hart was arrested that same day, and taken to the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga.  She was booked on charges of felony child abuse and attempted murder, and remained locked up in lieu of $1 million bail, records indicated Friday afternoon.
