Police Planning Holiday DUI Crackdown

Agencies across San Bernardino County will begin Avoid the 25 sweeps as part of the end of the year festivities.

Police agencies across San Bernardino County will begin the holiday season patrols aimed at keeping the streets safe from drunk drivers this weekend.

The Avoid the 25 program will employ both saturation patrols and checkpoints to make sure that the drunk drivers are kept off the streets.

Activities will begin Friday, with checkpoints scheduled in San Bernardino and Redlands. The Redlands checkpoint will be from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. Saturday in the southbound lanes of Cajon Street south of Cypress Avenue. A saturation patrol is also scheduled in Colton.

Saturday night, Redlands police officers will be on the streets again. A checkpoint is scheduled to be from 10 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday in the westbound lanes of Redlands Boulevard between State and Eighth streets.

“There will be no spreading holiday cheer behind the bars of a jail cell,” said Redlands Police Sgt Rick Smith in a news release. “Don’t let your 2011 holiday season end in an arrest or worse, death. Remember, whether you’ve had way too many or just one too many, it’s not worth the risk.”

More checkpoints and patrols may be added at later dates.

Funding for the program is provided by a grant form the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
