Prevent Identity Theft: Cabazon Station, Calimesa Police to Host 'Shred-a-Thon'

Residents of the San Gorgonio Pass area are invited to the free event, sheriff's officials said.

The sheriff's Cabazon Station is helping host a free "shred-a-thon" next Saturday in an effort to help prevent identity theft.

The event is being held "for the safe and secure disposal of personal records or documents that contain sensitive or personnel information, that if improperly disposed of, could be used to facilitate fraud or identity theft," Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Donald Fortney said in an announcement.

On Nov. 3, people from the San Gorgonio Pass area are welcome to bring up to five boxes of documents to shred, Fortney said.

The free event is co-sponsored by the company Sergeant Shredder, a mobile shredding company that only employs former firefighters, military and law enforcement officers that have passed background investigations.

"Residents can witness the destruction of their records or documents on-site," Fortney said.
