The event is part of the city's five-phase Crime-Free Multi-Housing program that emphasizes community-oriented crime prevention through communication with property managers, tenants, and police, according to Carl Baker, a Redlands Police spokesman.

The city has participated in the San Bernardino County Crime-Free Multi-Housing program since 1995, he said in a news release.

Phase 1 includes a one-day workshop that introduces the program and provides professionally-led classroom instruction on a crime-free rental addendum, eviction proces, tenant screening, property managment, Fair Housing issues, gangs, graffiti, and narcotics identification.

The second phase has police officers doing security assessments of the apartment complexes, known as Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), designed to help managers come up with ideas to make their compexes safer, Baker said.

After managers and owners complete Phase 3, they can order and post signs designating their apartment complexes as Crime-Free. During Phase 4 of the program, Redlands Police offers meet with tenants and mangers at participating complexes, he said. Residents will get information about local crime trends and crime prevention techniques.

Once Phase 5 is reached, the complex is certified as "Crime-Free."

"Crime-Free Multi-Housing participants have seen a reduction in calls for service and a reinforced partnership with the community," Baker said.

The Redlands Police Department offers to workshops per year on the program, one in spring and one in fall.
