Redlands PD Seeks Business Partners to Help 'Get Guns Off the Streets'

Police are seeking partners to offer a $50 gift card to each individual who turns over a functioning firearm to police, a Redlands spokesman said.

Redlands Police oficials are seeking business and community partners to participate in a Gifts for Guns program.

The program is designed to "get guns off the streets" of Redlands by offering a $50 gift cards to each individual who turns over a functioning firearm to police, a Redlands spokesman said.

Gifts for Guns "is based on a successful gun collection program conducted by law enforcement agencies throughout the State of California that has taken thousands of guns off the streets since its inception," Redlands spokesman Carl Baker said.

"The program provides anonymity to those who turn in guns," Baker said. "Based on the experiences of other agencies, Redlands Police estimate they could collect between 50 and 100 guns. After the guns are collected they are destroyed."

Stater Bros. Markets representatives have already donated $1,000 in gift cards to the Redlands Police Department for the Gifts for Guns program, Baker said. Target representatives have also agreed to a gift card donation to support the program.

"The Redlands Police Department invites other local businesses to participate by donating $50 gift cards that can be exchanged to get another weapon off the street," Baker said.
