SHARP FIRE: Mandatory Evacuations Ordered in Parts of Wrightwood

A fire broke out Thursday in heavy timber in the Wrightwood area northwest of Loma Linda and Redlands, and the Sheriff's Department issued mandatory evacuation orders for residents in the Sharp Canyon area.

The fire had consumed about 60 acres of fuel as of 6:30 p.m. and 100 firefighters were assigned as well as two helicopters, Ryan Carey of the Angeles National Forest said in a phone interview.

A DC-10 tanker made at least one drop earlier Thursday, Carey said. There were no known injuries, property damage or road closures in effect, Carey said.

The fire was first reported around 12:15 p.m. Aug. 8 in the area of Desert View Drive and Orchard Drive, south of Highway 2, Carey said.

Shortly after 5 p.m., the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department issued mandatory evacuation orders for residents who live on Mojave Scenic Drive, East Canyon, Lone Pine to Buckthorn, Slippery Elm and Mahogany Road.

An evacuation center was set up at Serrano High School in Phelan, Cindy Bachman of the Sheriff's Department said.

Smoke from the fire was drifting east near the high end of Cajon Pass and it was clearly visible for miles.
