Sheriff's Officials Search for Burglars Who Targeted Elderly Victim

One burglar distracted her while at least one other stole items from the elderly woman's home.

San Bernardino Sheriff’s officials are asking the public’s help in finding a female burglar who victimized an elderly woman.

According to officials, about 5 p.m. Feb. 11, a woman approached a home in the 5800 block of Sycamore Avenue in unincorporated Rialto. When the elder woman answered, the burglar introduced herself as Mary, a subcontractor who trimmed trees for Southern California Edison.

“Mary” talked her way into the woman’s backyard then made a cell phone call. She spoke with someone for about 10 minutes and then walked to an awaiting black truck parked in the victim’s driveway, investigators said.

After the two drove off, the homeowner walked into her home and realized she had been burglarized, officials said. The thieves took a small safe with valuables and World War II memorabilia.

Investigators later confirmed “Mary” was not an employee of a sub-contractor or Southern California Edison.

Officials warn residents to be wary when approached in this way. Anyone affiliated with a utility company will have an identification card, officials said.

If they do not, or the circumstances appear suspicious, investigators advise residents have the person to wait outside while you check their credentials.

The family of victim in this case is offering a reward to anyone with information that leads investigators to the identity and/or location of the burglars, their arrest and conviction. We-Tip will also pay up to a $1,000 to anyone with information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the suspects.

Mary is described as a white female, age 18-28, 5-foot-3 and 115-120 pounds. She had long medium blonde hair with braids on both sides. She and a second suspect drove off in a black pick up truck.
