Suspect Arrested in Shooting of Deputy Who Went to Serve Eviction Notice

A suspect accused of shooting and wounding a San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy on Tuesday was behind bars Wednesday.

Investigators identified the suspect as Miguel Alvarez, 33, of San Bernardino, and arrested him at 11:45 p.m. July 16 at 19th and Elmwood, according to the Sheriff's Department and inmate records.

"Investigators have not identified a motive in this shooting," sheriff's personnel said in a statement.

The shooting occurred when deputies went to a residence in the 1400 block of East Date Street in San Bernardino to serve an eviction notice, according to the Sheriff''s Department.

Deputies with the sheriff's Court Services Division "were still in their marked patrol units, a suspect vehicle drove past and opened fire, striking the driver’s side of the unit and the deputy," sheriff's personnel said.

Both deputies got out their patrol cars and return fire at the suspect. A San Bernardino police officer found the suspect vehicle and driver in the area of Elmwood, south of Highland Avenue.

The wounded deputy was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries and released Tuesday evening, sheriff's personnel said.

Alvarez was held on suspicion of attempted murder Wednesday at West Valley Detention Center and his bail was $1 million, according to inmate records.
