Suspected Burglar Discovered by Residents in Their Home

A 24-year-old, accused of breaking into a Redlands home, fled when he was discovered by the residents, according to police.

A 24-year-old man who police said broke into a home then fled when the residents discovered him was in custody today.

Redlands Police officials received a report just after noon on Jan. 22. A couple that lives at a home, in the 800 block of Brookside Avenue residents, discovered the intruder, officials said. The burglar fled into the zanja behind the residence.

Officers searched the area and found Matthew Wayne Gillespie coming out of the zanja near Palmbrook and New York Street, Redlands Police officials said. The victims identified him as the man they saw in their house and items stolen from the home were found in Gillespie’s backpack, according to police officials.

Gillespie could face charges of burglary and possession of stolen property. He was booked into the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga. Bail was set at $75,000.

The investigation continues. Redlands Police ask anyone with additional information to call Redlands Police Dispatch at (909) 798-7681. Anonymous tips can be submitted by texting 274637 using the keyword “REDTIP.”
