There is Smoke and Fire But No Emergency

Redlands Fire, and other local fire crews, will be conducting live-training through Wednesday on State Street.

If you see smoke and fire engines on State Street don’t panic. There is no emergency.

The scene is actually part of training for Redlands Fire, and other local fire crews, that started at 8 a.m. today and runs to 6 p.m. The training will continue through Wednesday.

Units and personnel from Loma Linda, San Manuel, Yucaipa, Colton, Anaheim, Escondido, and Orange County Fire departments will be participating.

Firefighters will train at several apartment buildings at 850 W. State St. Property owners Esri gave the crews access the buildings which are scheduled to be demolished, said Carl Baker, spokesman with Redlands Fire.

Some training has already been conducted at the site. After the live-fire training exercises are completed, the buildings will be demolished and the area reconditioned, Baker said.

“Opportunities for safe and effective live fire training rarely present themselves,” said Redlands Fire Chief Jeff Frazier.  “As you might imagine we cherish the opportunity to allow our firefighters to attack and suppress fires in a controlled educational environment.  This training can literally make the difference between life and death for the firefighters and the residents we are sworn to protect.”

All hazardous materials, including asbestos, lead paint, carpet, carpet padding, and appliances were removed prior to any of the fire training, officials said.  Firefighters are using wood, hay, and other common combustibles to ignite fires to reduce the impact on the environment and community, officials said. The training has been approved by South Coast Air Quality Management District.

State Street will be closed directly in front of the training. Emergency vehicles will be on site with pumps in operation along with gas-powered saws and smoke blowers.  And the department officials say they intend to burn only when wind conditions allow.

“There will also be excitement and the opportunity to see firefighters knocking down fires and honing their skills,” said Chief Frazier.

Redlands Fire officials advise residents to stay clear of the 800 block of West State Street if possible. Questions or comments can be made to call the Redlands Fire Department at (909) 798-7600 or contact one of the firefighters at the training site.
