Two Boys on Bike, Ages 9 and 6, Injured in Crash with Chevy Impala

Two boys ages, 9 and 6, were riding on the same bicycle Monday in Highland when they entered the road and were struck by a Chevy Impala, resulting in major injuries for both boys, according to the Sheriff's Department.

The crash was reported about 5:15 p.m. July 8 as a vehicle vs. bicyclist collision in the 25900 block of 9th Street, east of Sterling Avenue in Highland, deputies said in a statement.

"Upon arrival, deputies found two male juveniles lying in the roadway, both appeared to have suffered major injuries as a result of the collision," deputies said. "The driver of the vehicle involved, was also located at the scene by deputies."

The boys were treated at the scene by Cal-Fire and then taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center, deputies said.

Investigators believe the two boys were riding a single bicycle west on the north sidewalk of 9th Street and then suddenly entered the roadway in front of the westbound Impala, deputies said.

"The vehicle collided with the bicycle, causing both juveniles to fall onto the roadway," deputies said. "It appears at the time of the collision, neither juvenile was wearing a helmet. The collision caused both juveniles to sustain major injuries to their heads and upper torsos."

The boys were listed in stable condition in Loma Linda, deputies said.

The driver of the Impala was identified as Lewis Johnson, 47, of San Bernardino. No one had been charged in connection with the crash as of Tuesday morning, a sheriff's spokeswoman said.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information related to the investigation was urged to call Sgt. Michael O'Brien or Deputy Jonathan Thorp of the
sheriff's Major Accident Investigation Team at (909) 790-3105.
