UPDATE: Full Containment Date for Hathaway Fire Burn Area Now 'Undetermined'

Previous estimates that the Hathaway Fire burn area east of Redlands and northeast of Banning would be 100 percent contained by June 25 were tossed out Tuesday, and a target date for full containment was re-assessed as "undetermined," Forest Service officials said.

Aside from a stretch of fire perimeter in steep, jagged terrain of the San Gorgonio Wilderness, the 3,825-acre Hathaway burn area was still considered 95 percent contained as of 6 p.m. Tuesday, USFS spokeswoman Carol Underhill said.

The "uncontained" line comprising 5 percent of the burn area perimeter is on the northeast edge of the fire, according to incident commanders and firefighters.

"Here the burn borders a rocky area and there is no projected growth," incident commanders said in an update Tuesday. "The full containment date of the fire is undetermined at this time."

Personnel assigned to the incident totaled 36 as of 6 p.m. June 25, Underhill said.

The cause of the fire, which broke out Sunday June 9 on the north edge of the Morongo Indian Reservation, remained under investigation. Twelve firefighters have sustained minor injuries.

Incident command for the Hathaway Fire is now at Mill Creek Ranger Station in Mentone.
