Van Catches Fire in Live Oak Canyon, Flames Spread, One Acre Scorched

A van caught fire early Thursday in Live Oak Canyon south of Interstate 10, and the flames spread, scorching about an acre of brush before Redlands firefighters put the fire out, a city spokesman said.

Arson investigators were looking into the cause, Redlands spokesman Carl Baker said. Police were trying to determine if the vehicle was stolen or involved in any crimes.

The fire was reported around 2 a.m. June 20 on Live Oak Canyon Road about a mile south of the 10, Baker said.

"When they arrived they found the burning Chevrolet van had ignited the surrounding vegetation," Baker said. "Police closed the roadway while firefighters extinguished the blaze."

A total of 19 firefighters stopped forward spread of the vegetation fire and extinguished the van fire, Baker said.

No injuries were reported and no structures were damaged, Baker said. Firefighters remained at the scene about two hours.
