Vehicle Slams into Caltrans Construction Site

Several passengers inside a red Honda were thrown onto the roadway after their car hit a tractor-trailer truck on the I-10 near Colton.

Several people were seriously injured Wednesday when a car they were riding veered off into a Caltrans construction zone and struck a tractor-trailer truck on Interstate 10.

The crash happened at 1:45 a.m. on the eastbound lanes of the I-10 at Pepper Avenue in Colton and it appears to involve alcohol, California Highway Patrol officials said.

Caltrans crews were resurfacing lanes at the time, according to reports.

A red Honda carrying six hit the tractor-trailer as it traveled roughly 70 miles per hour causing the car to roll, according to officials. No one was wearing a seatbelt and some passengers were ejected, officials said.

The injured were taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center and Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton.

A 17-year-old who was sitting in the back seat on the passenger's side was in critical condition with a broken neck while four others had injuries ranging from a lacerated liver to head wounds, according to KTLA News.

The driver of the car, who is 18, was given a field sobriety test at the scene and then arrested, KTLA reported.
