Yucaipa Teen Must Stand Trial in Police Chase, Judge Says

The 19-year-old is suspected of stealing a vehicle in Yucaipa a day before he was involved in a police chase through Beaumont, according to law enforcement officials.

A 19-year-old Yucaipa man suspected of leading police on a high speed chase through Beaumont in a stolen car must stand trial, a judge ruled Monday.

Jesse Edward Robey of Yucaipa was arrested and booked on charges of car theft, resisting arrest, hit and run, reckless driving, possession of burglary tools, and knowingly receiving stolen property the night of the June 19 incident, according to jail records and Beaumont Police Spokeswoman Darci Mulvihill.

Following a preliminary hearing at the Banning Courthouse on Monday, Riverside County Superior Court Judge Jorge Hernandez ruled there was sufficient evidence to bound Robey over for trial on one count each of auto theft, evading, reckless driving, as well as misdemeanor charges of hit-and-run, possession of stolen property and possession of burglary tools.

However, he dismissed the felony allegation of resisting arrest.  The judge scheduled a post-preliminary hearing arraignment for Aug. 12 and left the defendant's bail set at $250,000.

According to Beaumont police, Robey was driving a white Acura in the area of Oak Valley Parkway and Pennsylvania Avenue around 7:34 p.m. June 19 when police tried to pull him over for a traffic violation.

"The car failed to stop and led officers on a brief pursuit through the City before losing control and crashing into a planter in 500 block of Egan Avenue," Mulvihill said, adding that the Acura had been reported stolen out of Yucaipa the previous day.

Once he crashed near the Precision Stampings building on Egan, south of 6th Street, the teen allegedly didn't stop there.  He tried to run away from the site, but was "quickly taken into custody," Mulvihill said.

He had to be treated for minor injuries sustained in the crash, but was then booked into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning, where he remained as of this week.

An unidentified male passenger who was riding with Robey was also treated for minor injuries, but released from police custody, according to Mulvihill.

According to court records, he has a prior felony conviction for possession of illegal drugs and misdemeanor convictions for vandalism and stealing public property.
