City of Redlands Pipe Replacement Project in Mentone to Begin Next Week

A Redlands project to replace old, leaking water pipes in the Soffel Avenue neighborhood in Mentone is scheduled to begin next week, a city spokesman said Tuesday.

"The pipeline is being replaced due to its age, frequency of leaks, and red water complaints, which are associated with aging steel pipes," Redlands spokesman Carl Baker said. "Construction on this project is expected to be completed by August 2013."

The neighborhood where the work is scheduled is north of Mentone Boulevard and west of the water tank at Agate Avenue and Capri Avenue.

The project plan calls for replacing pipe on Soffel Avenue from Opal Avenue to San Bernardino Avenue, on Turquoise Avenue from Capri Avenue to San Bernardino Avenue, and on San Bernardino Avenue from Opal Avenue to about 200 feet east of Soffel Avenue, Baker said.

Parking may be restricted on work site streets for the duration of construction, Baker said.

"Affected residents will have access to their property," Baker said. "Construction activities are scheduled between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Signs will be posted 72 hours in advance of repaving indicating parking restrictions."

The Redlands city council awarded a $352,815.81 contract for the project to MCC Equipment Rentals, Inc. on April 16, 2013, Baker said.

The project is funded by water revenues, and no city general fund dollars will be used on the project, according to Baker. The project was designed by and will be managed by the City of Redlands department of municipal utilities and engineering.
