City to Begin Building Sidewalks, ADA Ramps Near Three Redlands Schools

The contract for construction, valued at $769,556.50 was awarded by the city council in February to New Legacy Development Corp. of Fontana, according to city officials.

The City of Redlands plans next month to begin building more than 5,300 linear feet of sidewalks and 186 Americans with Disabilities Act ramps near Kingsbury Elementary, Smiley Elementary and Cope Middle schools, a city representative recently announced.

The contract for construction, valued at $769,556.50 was awarded by the city council in February to New Legacy Development Corp. of Fontana, Redlands spokesman Carl Baker said in a statement.

Construction is expected to begin in April and be completed by January 2014.

The project is part of a federal Safe Routes to Schools grant, Baker said.

"Grant funding provides 100 percent reimbursement for all costs and no General Fund money will be used for construction, inspection or management of the project," Baker said.

The Safe Routes to Schools, Cycle 2 project was designed and will be managed by the City of Redlands Municipal Utilities and Engineering Department, Baker said.

"All contractors on this project are required to carry a current City of Redlands business license," Baker said.

The project is expected to generate 18 jobs, Baker said.

"The City will make a concerted effort to minimize disruptions for residents and businesses in the project area," Baker said.

Construction work will occur Monday through Friday, except holidays, from the hours of 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
