Council to Get Report on Healthy Cities Program

The report is in response to a crowd who is opposed to a proposed McDonald's. They have asked the city to join a program that promotes health.

Only two weeks after a group of concerned locals lobbied the City Council to be more proactive in promoting health in the city, staffers will give a presentation to the council on the Healthy Cities Program.

About 50 locals packed the Sept. 27 council meeting, drawn in because of a proposed McDonald’s restaurant. The group is opposed because of the restaurant's reputation for having food with poor nutritional value.

But the conservation turned to involving the city into the California Healthy Cities and Communities. The program is part of the Center for Civic Partnerships, which itself is part of the Public Health Institute.

Healthy Cities provides support to more than 75 cities and communities throughout California that want to implement healthy programs, according to their website.

After being told it was premature to discuss the proposed commercial center on Mountain View Avenue and Barton Road, several of the speakers told the council promoting health through the program was a good direction to take.

“I’m involved in Healthy San Bernardino. I’ve seen Healthy Ontario develop,” Juan Carlos Belliard, assistant professor of environmental and occupational health, told the council on Sept. 27.  “It’s amazing that there are 14 cities in the county of San Bernardino - Healthy Adelanto, Healthy Apple Valley, Healthy Chino, Healthy Chino Hills etc. - 14 cities and we’re not listed among those cities.”

The meeting is scheduled at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Loma Linda City Council Chambers, 25541 Barton Road.
