Loma Linda Pastor Arrives in Japan in time for Another Quake

Thursday's quake measured a 7.1 and comes days after Paster Morihiro Kohama of Mission Road Church in Redlands, arrives in Japan with his family.

A 7.1 earthquake shook Japan today, rattling already frayed nerves and prompting yet another tsunami warning, according to the Associated Press.

The quake hit at 11:30 p.m. Japan time. A tsunami warning was issued but has been canceled. The AP has not reported any damage.

The philanthropically leaning city of Loma Linda is tied to Japan’s recovery. Mission Road Church - formerly the Loma Linda Japanese Church - has collected several thousand dollars that they donated to the Adventist Development and Relief Agency, or ADRA, in Japan.

And in late March, Mission Road Church’s Pastor Morihiro Kohama arrived in Japan. Prior to the disaster, he had been scheduled to assume a position at Sendai’s Adventist Church, said Senior Pastor Dean Horinouchi, also with Mission Road.

However, Kohama and his family were sent to the Nagano Church, Horinouchi told his congregation through Facebook.

“Because of the disaster, it is difficult to move the current pastor in Sendai,” Horinouchi wrote.

Sendai was among the hardest hit by the March 11 9.0 magnitude earthquake. The quake triggered a devastating tsunami cut a path of destruction along Japan's northeastern coast, according to several news reports.

Thursday's aftershock hit 30 miles under the water and off the coast of Miyagi prefecture. It was powerful enough to briefly shake buildings in Japan, according to the Associated Press.
