Jerry Bean Not Seeking Second Term on Redlands City Council

The Council member was elected to his first term in 2007.

Redlands City Council member Jerry Bean announced Friday that he will not seek reelection this November.

“I believe it’s time for others to take their turns on the City Council,” he said in a statement. “But I look forward to continuing to be active in Redlands civic activities.”

Bean, 69, was first elected in 2007; his term was extended to an extra year when the council moved the November city elections from odd-numbered years to even.

According to Bean, he announced his decision prior to the July 16 filing date in order to give potential candidates time to come forward.

“I’ve had several people tell me they want to know the incumbents’ intentions before they decide on running for the council,” he said. “I personally hope that strong candidates with conservative business credentials come forward. Those voices are needed on the council.”

Bean said that he is troubled by some things in the city.

“I’m still concerned about the low level of maintenance that we are able to practice for buildings, equipment, parks, medians and particularly streets,” he said. “Our curb appeal has definitely slipped over the past couple decades, and I support finding ways to improve that situation.”

Bean is the owner of Century Group Newspapers, which publishes five community papers in the Inland Empire. A past president of the California Newspaper Publishers Assn., Inland Action and the San Bernardino Symphony, he is on the boards of Family Service Association of Redlands and the Redlands Community Foundation, and is a volunteer for the Redlands Symphony.
