UPDATE: Lightning Sparks Multiple Fires in Mountains Near Angelus Oaks: USFS

All the fires were small and Forest Service firefighters were aware of them, a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino National Forest said.

Update 4:18 p.m. Thunderstorms spawned lightning that sparked multiple fires in the San Bernardino Mountains between noon and 5 p.m. Thursday, including two in the Bear Creek drainage.

By 4:15 p.m., at least 10 small fires were reported in the Angelus Oaks area, according to the Forest Service.

At 3:58 p.m., a fire was reported on the east side of Bear Creek drainage.

At 4:02 p.m., another fire was reported on the west side of Bear Creek drainage.

All the fires were small and Forest Service firefighters were aware of them, Carol Underhill of the San Bernardino National Forest said.

Update 3:58 p.m. Lightning in the mountains northeast of Redlands sparked at least eight fires near Angelus, and one more near Anza, according to the Forest Service.

At 3:18 p.m., a fire was reported north of Thomas Hunting Grounds, off Forest Road 1N12 west of Angelus Oaks, according to the Forest Service.

All the fires were small and Forest Service firefighters were aware of them, Carol Underhill of the San Bernardino National Forest said.

Update 3:38 p.m. Two more lighning strike fires were reported just before 3 p.m. Thursday near Angelus Oaks, bringing the total of spot fires in the San Bernardino Mountains to seven, according to the Forest Service.

At 2:49 p.m. a small fire was reported near Forest Road 1N09, about 1 mile north of Angelus Oaks, according to the Forest Service.

At 2:58 p.m., another small fire was reported near Camp Cedar Falls Area east of Angelus Oaks, according to the Forest Service.

Thunderstorms passing over the Transverse Ranges spawned lightning strikes that ignited fires between Angelus Oaks and Anza, a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino National Forest said.

Posted 3:08 p.m. Thunderstorms passing over the Transverse Ranges of Southern California spawned lightning strikes that ignited a half-dozen small fires Thursday between Angelus Oaks and Anza, a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino National Forest said.

The first spot fire was reported at 12:01 p.m. near Hog Lake Road Forest Road 6S18 in the Santa Rosa Mountains near Anza, Carol Underhill of the Forest Service in San Bernardino said.

The other five fires were reported near Angelus Oaks in the San Bernardino Mountains, Underhill said.

According to the Forest Service, the fires were reported at:

- !2:41 p.m. about 1 mile north of Morton Peak Lookout on Forest Road 1N12, about 1/10 acre.

- 1:11 p.m. near mile marker 22 of Highway 38 near Angelus Oaks, about 10 feet by 10 feet spot fire with one lane of the 38 closed.

- 1:48 p.m.  near Slide Peak, reported as single dead tree on fire.

- 2:29 p.m. northwest of Camp Tahquitz near Barton Flats and Angelus Oaks.

- 2:33 p.m. east of Camp Tahquitz near Barton Flats and Angelus Oaks.
