Loma Linda Elections Could Face Cancellation

The city has the right to cancel an election if they do not get enough candidates.

The city of Loma Linda will soon decide whether or not it will hold an election to fill three seats on the City Council after only three candidates filed to run.

Seats held by Mayor Rhodes Rigsby, Mayor Pro Tem Ovidiu Popescu and councilman Stan Brauer were up for election this year. Rigsby and Popescu filed for re-election, while Brauer, an anesthesiologist at the Loma Linda University Medical Center, decided against another term.

Dr. John Lenart, a member of the Loma Linda Planning Commission, was the only outside candidate to file, officials said.

The state’s elections code allows a city to cancel the elections and instead appoint candidates to council positions, said the City Clerk Pamela Byrnes-O’Camb. The city may also decide to proceed with the election.

The City Council will meet at 7 p.m. on March 22 to decide.
