Occupy Redlands Members Take Protest to Market Night

Members gathered for a "flash mob" style protest during the weekly Thursday event in downtown Redlands.

The members of the Occupy Redlands group took locals by surprise by taking their message to the people Thursday night, as they gathered for a "flash mob" protest at Market Night.

The group, which has steadily grown in recent days, was started in support of the Occupy Wall Street movement, that has been protesting against unfair banking practices and the bank bailout.

On Saturday, about 100 people from across the Inland Empire joined the Occupy movement around the world in Global Day of Action protests. The group will also take part in Saturday's Community Cleanup event from 8 a.m. to noon. For more information check the City of Redlands website.

At noon Saturday, Occupy Redlands members will also meet at Redlands Boulevard and Fifth Street, near Augie's Coffee Shop for a march that will head east on Redlands, south on Eighth Street, west on State Street then north on Orange Street, before doubling back toward Smiley Park where they will have a general assembly meeting.

Like many of the fellow Occupiers, members of the Redlands group is pushing to have corporate money taken out of politics.

"Ultimately politicans can represent the people who give them the largest contributions or they can represent the people who put them in office," said Keith Jackson, Occupy Redlands committee member, following the Oct. 15 march.
