As the news spread, crowds gathered at the nation’s capitol to dance, chant and sing the national anthem. In Loma Linda and Redlands, the reactions seemed more subdued though many said they were watching the news.

The shock of the death was too much for one Loma Linda resident, former military man, who asked for time to digest what had happened.

American intelligence learned of Bin laden’s whereabouts in August, President Obama said during his address.

It was far from certain and took many months to confirm, he said. Finally, President Obama said he ordered a targeted attack at the compound.

According to several television and print media, Bin laden was killed during a fierce firefight. No Americans were hurt.

For a decade Bin Laden has been on the FBI’s top 10 most wanted criminal. He helped orchestrate the September 11, 2001 in which four hijacked airliners slammed into both World Trade Center Buildings and the Pentagon. The fourth aircraft crashed into a field in Somerset County Pennsylvania after passengers tried to take to take back control of the aircraft.

According to several reports some 3,000 people in New York City and Washington, D.C. died including more than 400 police officers and firefighters.

Bin laden was also wanted for the Aug. 7, 1998, bombings of the United States Embassies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Nairobi, Kenya. These attacks killed over 200 people, according to the FBI.
