Potential Buyer for Break Estate is Chosen

A physician has made an offer of just over $300,000 for the historic home next to Hulda Crooks Parks.

A year and a half after purchasing the historic Allen Break Estate, and almost a year after putting it on the market, Loma Linda has accepted an offer from a potential buyer.

City Manager T. Jarb Thaipejr delivered the news about the possible sale to the Parks, Recreation and Beautification committee on Monday.

The buyer, Dr. Scott Miller, of Upland, has agreed to a selling price of $308,000, outbidding an unnamed competitor who offered $260,000 - the price originally paid by the City Loma Linda in 1995.

“We will split the cost of escrow 50/50 between the city and the buyer,” Thaipejr said. “We’ll split the cost of attorney fees.”

Some renovations will still need to be made to the inside as the house that has been sitting unoccupied for some time, Thaipejr said.

The property is located next to Hulda Crooks Park on Allen Way and was part of a 60-acre parcel of land. The city chose to sell the historic home and an acre of land it sits on.

The committee asked that the entirety of the proceeds from the sale go the parks and recreation budget to allow for more parks projects.

The money “is for the recreational parks” committee member Janet Razzouk told the committee.

“As the parks committee, we have the fiduciary duty, I feel, to watch out for the city parks which is what we are supposed to do,” she said. This money will provide that opportunity, she said.

The city could not afford to keep the house, Thaipejr said. This could afford the city an opportunity to fix up other properties.
