Redlands Delays Vote on Packinghouse

The City Council decides to continue discussion on the possible sale of the historic site until July.

The Redlands City Council on Tuesday delayed a decision on the future of the MOD packinghouse in the city.

The City Council, which was acting in its capacity as the city's Redevolpment Agency Boaard, has been considering selling the property, which is one of the last citrus packinghouses still standing in the region.

The city's Historic and Scenic Preservation Committee will have a special meeting tonight at 6 p.m. to further discuss the issue.

Community groups and historians have been fighting to save the building, starting Facebook pages and mounting protests. Movie theater owner George Krikorian has been mentioned as a potential buyer.

While there is no official proposal for the property, the developer interested is interested in the property as the site of a grocery store. Community members are favoring a proposal that would buy the property and turn it over to the Redlands Historical Museum Association for use as a museum.

The City Council held off on making any decisions because councilmember Jon Harrison was out of town. The City Council and Redevelopment Agency will again discuss the item at its next regularly scheduled meeting, July 5.
