SB District Attorney: Make DNA Samples a Condition of Citizenship

San Bernardino County DA Michael Ramos has sent a personal letter to federal officials asking them to make DNA samples a part of the immigration reform conversation.

San Bernardino County District Attorney Michael Ramos has sent a personal letter to Speaker of the House John Boehner and Senator Harry Reid asking they consider requiring a DNA sample from those applying for citizenship in the US.

“We currently require immigrants to provide fingerprints for an FBI background check before receiving certain benefits,” Ramos wrote. “Requiring a DNA sample from applicants for immigration for the purpose of running it against CODIS (Combined DNA Index System) to identify criminals is a common sense hedge against criminals entering the US.”

Ramos’ letter was dated Jan. 28, a day before President Barack Obama publicly addressed immigration reform from Las Vegas and a day after a bipartisan group of senators, who are being referred to as the Gang of Eight, revealed their own recommendations for reform.
