Should San Bernardino County Use E-Verify?

Supervisor Neil Derry is pushing for restaurants to use E-Verify when they hire employees. But what do you think?

Supervisor Neil Derry wants to use San Bernardino County's restaurant grading ordinance as a tool that would inform customers if the establishment's owners and operators use E-Verify to conduct immigration checks on employees.

The Press-Enteprise ran an article on the Supervisor's effort Monday. Derry proposes color coding the placards that currently show the eateries letter grade.

A green background on the placard would mean the employers use E-verify, an Internet-based federal program, the report said. A red background would indicate they do not. Currently the placards only display an A, B, or C grade showing how well a restaurant passed its health inspection.

Derry told the P-E that the proposal is intended to circumvent a state law that prohibits cities and counties from requiring businesses to conduct mandatory immigration checks on their employees.

E-Verify and its use by employers has been a controversial topic. And while Supervisor Derry's effort is simply to reveal who is or is not using it, the real question is, should employers be forced to use E-Verify.
