Smaller Version of Last Year's History Fair Considered

The Historical Committee discusses the fair and LLUMC Centennial Pathway.

A smaller version of last year’s Loma Linda History Fair was considered by the city’s Historical Committee on Monday.

Committee Chairman James Shipp suggested postponing the popular fair to 2012. Shipp also suggested the celebration be held at Mission School. The school is opening this summer, he said, but only a few of the school’s classrooms would be open. Most of the buildings would be prepared the following year, he said.

Committee members then suggested they hold a smaller version, perhaps a tea with speakers.

“I have no problem with that,” Shipp said. A smaller event would keep it in the minds of those who enjoyed last year's event, Shipp said.

Committee member Lori Curtis gave an update on the pavers the Loma Linda University Medical Center is creating as part of its Centennial Pathway.

The pathway is designed in the form of a calendar--with 365 pavers for each year of Loma Linda's first century of service, according to medical center officials.

It begins at Magan Hall with the year 1905 and continues down the north central mall of the campus toward Stewart Street, where it ends at 2009, officials said.

“It will stop there because to continue they need to change the grade of (Stewart) Street,” Curtis said.

Finally, the committee adjourned to a 5:30 p.m. March 7 public meeting where they will discuss chapter 17.30 Historic Preservation city code which defines the committees duties, its guidelines and the criteria it follows in making decisions.

The effort is part of a review of city codes taken on by the Planning Commission. Commissioners have asked the committee to make their own recommendations before they proceeded with any more changes, city officials said.
