University of Redlands Report: Job Numbers in California Grow Steadily

Job growth in the Inland Empire 'deepens with large scattered areas showing significant job growth,' according to the Institute for Spatial Economic Analysis study.

Moderate job growth of 1 percent to 3 percent has been measured in San Bernardino and Riverside counties this month, with "significant" job growth of more than 3 percent in some areas, according to a University of Redlands study announced Friday.

The study is authored by Bing Bai, Faculty Fellow at the Institute for Spatial Economic Analysis, University of Redlands, School of Business.

Bai's study "finds year-over-year job growth in Southern California continues where evenly widespread moderate job growth still appears in Los Angeles County and Orange County," a university statement said. "Job growth in Inland Empire deepens with large scattered areas showing significant job growth."

Researchers combined data by industry from the California Employment Development Department with business pattern data by zip code and industry from the U.S. Census Bureau to arrive at their projected values, according to the university.

"The researchers point out that, given the data available to them, their projected values are only rough approximations of the true values, and that accuracy is higher for counties with larger populations," the university statement said. "Despite those shortcomings, the observed patterns should still be helpful for decision makers in politics, businesses and organizations to determine where to best direct their efforts."

The Institute for Spatial Economic Analysis strives to help regional, national and global business and government leaders better understand how socio-economic phenomena affect their communities, according to the university.
