READERS' CHOICE: Free Tax Help Offered

A Cal State San Bernardino program is teaming with a state-wide initiative to help low-income filers do their taxes and get on the Internet.

If you were looking for last minute tax help in Loma Linda, sorry. Maybe you should try one of the many computer options.

Only one vote was recorded in our weekly Readers' Choice poll, and that wasn't for a business in the city, so there will be no declared winner.

But we're not going to leave any of you last-minute filers hanging out to dry. We will tell you about an event Saturday that might be of some help.

The California Emerging Technology Fund, in conjunction with Cal State San Bernardino's Volunteer Tax Preparation group, will be having an event to help low-income tax filers from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Feldheym Library, 555 W. 6th St., in San Bernardino.

The groups will be offering tax advice to those who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit, and how some of that credit can be used to invest in ways to get hooked up to the Internet.

There will be a technology fair as part of the event, giving demonstrations in computer skills. And, as part of the Fund's Get Connected project, there will be information on low-cost computers and high-speed Internet providers.

The Get Connected project aims to help Californians learn the benefits of having a high-speed Internet connection.

The Cal State San Bernardino program has a series of dates available in the next week to help with basic returns for those with a gross income of less than $60,000. For times and places, you can check their website.
