49ers Nation? Facebook Map Shows NFL Fan Allegiances

Leading up to the Superbowl, the 49ers fanbase is reaching across the country.

It's not just Northern California bleeding red this week.

A new map created by Facebook's Data Science team shows the 49ers fanbase stretches from the California coast well into the Midwest before pockets of Ravens fans begin to crop up.

The analysis of 35 million Facebook users who have “liked” a National Football League team fan page paints a colorful picture of allegiances, hometown favorites and rivalries in the NFL.

The graphics, done down to a county level, show more Northern California support for the Niners than the Oakland Raiders during the NFL regular season, but the Raiders' have a fan base that stretches into Nevada and Oregon.

Deadspin.com calls it “the most accurate NFL fandom map ever created” and draws some interesting conclusions.

The graphics, done by Data Science team intern Sean J. Taylor, also show how allegiances changed as teams were eliminated during the playoffs—right down to this weekend's 49ers vs. Ravens Superbowl match-up.

Baltimore's fanbase appears strongest in the Mid-Atlantic and South, whereas San Francisco has supporters all the way to the banks of the Mississippi and in the Northeast.

Taylor's analysis even shows the top five fan-friendship teams. San Francisco fans, for example, are most likely to have friends who back Oakland, Dallas, Pittsburgh, San Diego and New England.

I have shopped at Staples for years and have yet gotten a so-called reward. Why the change of heartRead More now? The school supplies are overpriced anyway. I get things really inexpensively at Walmart right before school starts. There is no limit as to how many things one can buy like there is at Staples.

Usually I'd start with how teachers should be paid in line with their students grades, but for nowRead More I'll just suggest going to the .99 cent stores. You can get everything from 100 packs of #2 pencils to college ruled notebooks and binders, to pens and highlighters. We go there weekly and send boxes of school supplies, crayons and coloring books to our troops in Afghanistan to help them befriend the locals. The biggest score is cans of party string that usually go for $5. They spray it into a room and the streamers will hang on any tripwires without setting off the bomb. And try asking the store manager if corporate might be willing to throw in 2 for the price of one or a bakers dozen on highly stocked items if you can get several other teaches to also shop there. It never hurts to ask.
