Colton Advances to Soccer Quarterfinals

The Yellowjackets score late in the second half to knock off South Pasadena, 1-0.

While they didn't control play for long stretches Tuesday, in soccer, only the score matters.

And Colton High School's boys soccer team had the advantage there when the final whistle was blown.

A goal in about the 73rd minute, coming after a long throw in, propelled the Yellowjackets, the third place team from the San Andreas League, into the quarterfinals of the Division 5 CIF-Southern Section Ford Championships, as they defeated South Pasadena High School, 1-0.

Colton will find themselves making a long bus ride to continue their playoff journey. The Yellowjackets will travel to Santa Maria to play Pioneer Valley, which upset second-seeded Silverado 1-0 Tuesday.

Area girls teams will take the pitch Wednesday for their second round games. Redlands High School will take the field at home against third-seeded Dana Hills in the Division 1 bracket. Both teams scored impressive shut out victories in the first round.

Both games are scheduled for 3 p.m.

In girls water polo, two local teams will enter the pool for the semifinal round Wednesday night.

In Division 5, Redlands East Valley will be playing top-seeded Bonita in the second of two games at Mt. San Antonio College. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start.

In Division 7, Citrus Valley will also take on the top-seeded team in their bracket, as they will play Santa Ana Valley at 6:30 p.m. at Costa Mesa High School. The game will be the second of two games played as part of the semifinals.
