Play Ball Says Loma Linda Little League

The league officially kicked off its 2011 season on Sunday.

Hundreds of people converged on Loma Linda Baseball Park on Sunday for one of the most revered sporting rites of the year: Little League baseball opening ceremonies.

It's the one day a year when everyone starts with a clean slate. And clean uniforms.

Loma Linda Little League opened its newest season fielding 19 teams in five baseball and two girls softball divisions.

Tom Perkins threw out the ceremonial first pitch and games got underway.

The league is set up to accommodate the large Seventh-day Adventist community in the area. Games for most divisions are not scheduled during the Sabbath, from sundown Friday through sundown Saturday. The league also has an agreement with neighboring leagues that allows Adventist players receive a waiver to transfer to Loma Linda to help avoid any conflicts for families.

Because they have so few teams in some age groups, Loma Linda participates in interleague play with teams from Grand Terrace, Bloomington and Ken Hubbs Little League in Colton.

The league is also seeking more volunteers and sponsors for the season. Contact Kenny Boyd, the league's player agent, at kenny.boyd05@gmail.com if you are interested in more information.
