Second Half Collapse Spoils Redlands' Homecoming

The Terriers commit three second half turnovers in only 18 plays to fall to La Costa Canyon, 28-13.

Redlands High School crowned its homecoming king and queen at halftime Friday night.

And its football team responded by playing a second half like a bunch of court jesters.

The Terriers only ran 18 plays in the second half, committing three turnovers, giving visiting La Costa Canyon a 28-13 victory.

Coach Jim Walker had little to say after the game, saying only "We didn't play well the second half" before walking off the field to talk to his players in the locker room.

The Terriers (1-3) had a 13-7 lead at the half, and had held the Mavericks' offense off the scoreboard -- La Costa Canyon scored when Scott Quessenberry recovered his own blocked punt in the end zone.

But Redlands had a chance to extend the lead just before half, catching a break by recovering a muffed punt at the Canyon 3-yard-line with 5.4 seconds remaining. But Michael Stallone was stopped short of the goal line as time ran out.

And it was all downhill from there.

La Costa Canyon (2-2) turned to its ground game in the second half, feeding a steady diet of running backs Deon Dickey and Isaac Maquet at the Terrier defense that wasn't able to stop them.

"The plan's always to control the football and keep our offense on the field," said La Costa Canyon coach Sean Sovacool.

On their first drive of the second half, Maquet was handed the ball 10 straight times as part of a 75-yard drive that burned 7:06 off the clock. Maquet dove in from inside the 1 to tie the score at 13, with kicker Gabe Renna adding the PAT to give the Mavericks their first lead.

And the wheels fell off from there for the Terriers. On their third play, Craig Lee's fumble bounced up into the arms of linebacker Jack Wangerin, who returned it 38 yards for a touchdown.
