Excessive Heat Warning Issued for Area That Includes Redlands and Loma Linda

High pressure over the Great Basin will continue a warming trend with high temperatures for inland areas through Thursday, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures could be 8 to 12 degrees above average for this time of year.

An excessive heat warning was issued just after 6 p.m. Tuesday for the next two days in the inland valley area including Redlands and Loma Linda.

"The hottest days in the Inland Empire will be Wednesday and Thursday," the National Weather Service advised in a statement at 6:01 p.m. July 10.

Highs for Redlands and Loma Linda peaked Tuesday afternoon at 102, National Weather Service meteorologist Noel Isla said in a phone interview.

More of the same is expected Wednesday and Thursday, with overnight lows remaining in the mid to low 70s, according to the Weather Service.

The excessive heat warning is in effect from 11 a.m. Wednesday to 7 p.m. Thursday.

"The combinations of hot days with very warm nights can result in very oppressive conditions . . . in which the body cannot recover as quickly," the Weather Service advised. "Conditions like heat stroke or heat exhaustion are possible . . . especially if engaging in strenuous outdoor activities.

"This weather could be deadly for campers or hikers," the Weather Service advised.

Slow cooling is expected to begin Friday, according to the Weather Service.

Heat-related tips from the Weather Service include:

- Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside.

- When possible . . . reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.

- Know the signs and symptoms of heat stroke.

- Wear light-weight and loose-fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

- Take advantage of air conditioning and shade if possible.

- Never leave children or pets in enclosed vehicles . . . even briefly.
