Orange County Wheelmen Doing 28th Annual 'Ride Around the Bear' Saturday

Members of the Orange County Wheelmen bicycle club are planning to start their 28th Annual "Ride Around the Bear" on Saturday morning in Redlands.

The club is scheduled to begin their 100-mile ride at 5:30 a.m. at Sylvan Park, ride captain Lee Stebbins said in a phone interview.

"Registration starts at 5:30 and the last rollouts will be at 7," Stebbins said. "Any later and they won't finish."

The ride route is described on a Wheelmen web page as "Very Hilly ride up Hwy 330 /18 to Big Bear Lake. Lunch at Dana Point Park (45 mile mark) before continuing up to Onyx summit @ 8400’ and 62 mile mark. Have fun on the fast downhill for the next 38 miles."

Caltrans issued an advisory Wednesday that included route info from Redlands to SR330, SR 18, Big Bear Dam, Fawnskin, Big Bear City, and SR 38 back to Redlands.

"The riders are expected to be off SR 38 by approximately 4:00 p.m.," the Caltrans advisory stated.

"Motorists are advised that traffic on the above-mentioned routes will be impeded by the cycling event," Caltrans advised. "Use alternate routes or alter your travel time if possible to the San Bernardino Mountains this Saturday."

The Orange County Wheelmen are planning to meet Saturday morning at Sylvan Park's Lot C on East Park Avenue.
