Adventist Community Comes to the Aid of Typhoon Victims

The Adventist Community, which is strong in Loma Linda, is calling for action to help the Philippines in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan.

The Adventist Community is coming to the aid of the Philippines who is dealing with the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan.

ADRA, or the Adventist Development and Relief Agency, has put out the word that they have landed on the ground. Loma Linda is home to Loma Linda University Medical Center and a number of Adventist churches and has strong ties to ADRA.

The agency called for action on their Facebook page. Below is the message.

Our team on the ground, led by Cindy Bankhead, is working with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), local and international partners, and church organizations to address victims’ immediate needs.

Communication is very challenging at the moment, as cell towers are down and power outages in the path of #TyphoonHaiyan.

Main roads are blocked by downed trees and debris. And dead bodies are being piling up in affected regions. Many infrastructures are wiped out, houses damaged, public and private buildings destroyed. Flash floods, mudslides, wind damage and storm surges along coastal areas are being reported.

Haiyan is described as one of the most powerful storms ever recorded.

Thousands are dead. According to Reuters news service Super the typhoon destroyed about 70 to 80 percent of the structures in the Leyte province on Friday They cite police chief superintendent Elmer Soria as their source.

The story goes on to describe people as walking around as if in a zombie-like state. Reuters has the full report.
