Five Things You Need To Know Today

Today is May 11. Here are a few things you might want to know today.

MILD WEATHER: We’re supposed to be staying within comfortable temperatures. National Weather Service officials predict today will be sunny with a high near 76 degrees. Tonight should be mostly clear with a low around 56, weather service officials said. Winds could gust as high as 20 miles per hour.

RAIL PRESENTATIONS: San Bernardino Associated Governments is hosting public information meetings on a passenger rail service project that will run between the City of San Bernardino and the University of Redlands. The event is scheduled from 4:30–7:30 p.m. tonight, with the main presentation set to start at 5:15 p.m. at ESRI at the Cafe, 380 New York St. The meetings are an opportunity for the public to offer comments and ask questions, organizers said. There will be displays illustrating key parts of the projects. A presentation will be made to provide more information on the costs, schedule, station area planning and other aspects of the Redlands Passenger Rail Project, organizers said.

FUNDRAISER AUCTION: The Friends of the AK Smiley Public Library are hosting another silent auction through May 17. Some 50 books are on display in the Main Library, 125 W Vine St., Redlands. Visit the auction page for information.

PUBLIC APPEARANCE: Dr. Craig Jackson, Dean of Loma Linda University School of Allied Health, will be the featured speaker at the Rotary Clubs of San Bernardino's Character Education Conference today in San Bernardino. The conference will honor teachers in the San Bernardino Unified School District. It will be at the Hilton in San Bernardino from 11:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. Reservations for the event were due April 30.

KILLING MACHINES?: A little help please. While making my daily Facebook rounds I noticed a small advertisement with the headline, “Send Colbert A Bear.” I’m a fan of “The Colbert Report.” Host Stephen Colbert “fears” bears calling them "Godless killing machines." It seems that an organization called (I’m not familiar with them) Defenders of Wildlife is selling stuffed bears as a fundraiser. You buy one, they send the bear to Stephen in an effort to educate people about imperiled bears. Has anyone heard about this one? I have not heard Mr. Colbert himself talk about it. If anyone can shed some light on this, please, let me know.
