Five Things You Need to Know Today

Today is June 30. Here are a few things going on in and around your community.

ONE MORE DAY: Well, it looks like the weather's going to give us a reprieve for one more day. The National Weather Service is now forecasting a high around 88 degrees today, with a calm breeze blowing from the west. Overnight, will be clear with a low around 59 degrees. The forecast for Friday, however, is calling for a return to the high 90s for the long Independence Day weekend.

PARENT MEETING: Today is the final mandatory informational meeting for parents wanting to enroll their child in the Colton-Redlands-Yucaipa Regional Occupational Program's Xtreme Summer Day Camp. The program is open to children entering sixth grade through those exiting eighth grade. Tonight's meeting is from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at CRYROP's offices, 1226 Indiana Court, Redlands. Camps focus on teaching students skills in the fields of math, science, technology and engineering. For information, or to register, visit the CRYROP website, or call (909) 793.3115, ext 511.

MARKET NIGHT: Fun, food and shopping can all be found at the weekly Redlands Market Night. Redlands-based Buffalo Blues Band will be one of the featured performers at tonight's event, which takes over downtown Redlands. During our trip there last week, we scored some great barbecue from one of the booths, and we brought home an amazing apple pie from Colton's Mommie Helen's bakery. The Redlands Humane Society, who normally has an adoption area set up, will not be at this week's event.

NEW TOP COP: The Loma Linda City Council welcomed a new San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Liaison Tuesday night. Lt. Steve Dorsey will work with the city, taking over for Lt. Nina Jameson, who has been reassigned to the Sheriff’s Academy. Jameson had worked with the city for 2 ½ years. It is customary for officials to rotate in and out of certain positions, city officials said.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS: The Unforgettables Foundation teased us on their Facebook page Wednesday night. The nonproift group founded in Loma Linda is apparently working some kind of benefit with contemporary swing band Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, best known for their appearance in the movie "Swingers." If you have never seen the boys from BBVD, they are a treat live. The concert will be Oct. 1 at Monte de Oro Winery, 35820 Rancho California Road in Temecula. Benefit information is still being worked out, but the winery website lists tickets available for $45 general admission and $95 VIP. VIP admission includes parking, table seating, a plated three-course meal, souvenir glass and two glasses of wine. General admission includes the glass and one glass of wine.
